Assignment: To shape the chair of time – design for Gustav Adolf's Church in Borås.
To design a chair for a church is to create more than a seat – it is to embody a feeling of stillness, reverence and timelessness. In the church space, generations, architecture and spirituality meet, and the furniture that fills it must carry the same ability to convey presence across time.
The chair I have designed is meant to age with dignity - to, like the church roof, bear the marks of time. With materials such as copper, the chair develops a natural patina, making each chair unique. It is a piece of furniture that does not wear out, but matures. It changes, without losing its form or function – much like the faith, the tradition and the space it is part of.
The chair is for everyone who visits the church, stackable, lightweight and comfortable.
By attentively relating to the church's architecture – its light, lines and history – a chair is created that does not compete, but complements. A chair that harmonizes with the spiritual and aesthetic values of the space, and that carries forward the feeling of quiet presence through decades.
The chair's outer copper alloy draws inspiration from the church roof, which like the chair ages over time.
The chair has been designed following the design process. Drawing made in AutoCAD and rendering made in 3ds Max.
